I have just started designing etched kits and i am looking for fairly
easy things for a "to-do" list. (i already have a long list of
complicated things!)

would anyone be interested in an etched kit of the APT. it would have
single piece preformed coaches and driving cars with a cast whitemetal
end for the driving car. it would also be east to produce Coaches that
never existed such as the motorail carridges.

if so does anyone have ACCURATE drawings showing the radiuses of the
coaches in cross section?

your message anyway.

Subject: Re: INTERCITY STORY - BOOK
The January 2005 issue of Rail Express magazine contains the
following article:

"The Advanced Passenger Train emerged briefly from the shadows on
December 12th 1984, when it set a new record of 3 hours 53 minutes
between Euston and Glasgow. The high-speed special unusually ran in
the dark throughout, departing Euston at 16.35. Upon arrival at
Glasgow Central the train had covered the 401.25 miles at an average
of 103mph! However, in true West Coast tradition, this had not been
without an unwanted signal stop of two minutes at Stafford. The train
was formed from a shortened, ten-car APT-P set, including power cars
Sc49003 City of Derby and Sc49006, packing a punch of 8,000hp.

Despite being withdrawn after its embarrassing failures upon entering
service in 1981, the APT prototypes continued on valuable high-speed
trials work, even forming occasional timetabled relief trains.

It had been just over three years since the previous record, December
7th 1981, also set by APT, on the train's inaugural timetabled
Glasgow-Euston run, accomplished in 4 hours 14 minutes at an average
95mph. A maximum speed of 138mph was achieved near Blisworth – the
fastest fare-paying rail passengers had ever been conveyed in the
British Rail system."

ties in there. We'll wait and see if the Pendolino beats that time !

Subject: Models and records
What an interesting set of posts this morning! <g>

Re etched brass models, yes PLEASE! I've always thought E-Train was a good
candidate for that sort of technology, the air intakes themselves are
almost designed for it. Having done it in plastcard myself twice in N Gauge
(see the pics of my N gauge power car on Paul's site) I know just how
difficult it is to produce a realistic looking car in that scale.

I've still got a cross sesction template in N gauge, but it's actually
2mm/ft as it was easier to scale down Not an inconsiderable problem is the
space available in either an E-Train or P-Train in N gauge to fit the motor
bogie. It's very small indeed as the tumble-home limits the width of any
motor that can be fitted.

That cast white metal nose for E-Train will weigh a bit for sure, at least
it will stay on the track at a scale 153 mph.......

Don't even THINK about tilt systems in N gauge! <g>

As to records, the telling point in the description is the 'ten car' bit.
That indicates a 2 + 6 set with two power cars, or maybe a 3 + 5. As you
can bet the leading car set was empty, just as it was on the inaugural run,
it means the whole consist would have been quite light, with maybe only a
possible 50% passenger load. That bears out my supposition a while ago that
the 'above 100 mph average' claim wasn't entirely based on normal running
practices.

As for the 138 mph at Blisworth on the inaugural run, my response would be
'Yeah right................' <g>

As I've mentioned before, I was invited into the rear cab on that run by
Ron Puntis as the train descended the Lune Valley and the speedo was
reading WELL above 140 at the time! I suspect the '138' was the best they
could hope would be politically acceptable.

When we tested E-Train to it's maximum performance at Old Dalby the line
limit there was 130, but E-Train could blast right past that. To ensure we
weren't censured for breaking the limit the cab crew, Alan Rimmer usually,
would be calling the speedo reading as it accelerated and this would be
echoed by the team in TC2, Brian or Hugh or even sometimes me. The intercom
track would go like this '

Cab: 128
TC2 :128

Cab: 130
TC2 :130

Cab: 130
TC2 :133

Cab: 130
TC2 :136

Cab: 130
TC2 :138

Cab: 130
TC2 :140

etc etc <g>

Only the tapes from the cab were for 'official consumption' of course.

Let's hope the Pendelino gets close, but not too close............. <g>

Hello paul.

Sorry I should have been more spacific in my origional post.
I Would only really do a model of the P-train and it would be in 4mm.
this would be to correct hornby's effort and produce all the missing
rolling stock.
the dimensions i am missing are all the radiuses. Ie the roof, the
roof/side joint, the side/lower bodyside joint, the floor.

Absolutely! But Virgin Trains can't lose as it's a "win win"
situation for them. If they don't break the record they will talk
about all the money raised for charity and what a great experience
it was for all the lucky enthusiasts aboard (I was offered a 1st
class ticket but am unavailable - doh!).

Virgin have already covered their back if they fail with the
following statement "If BR's APT record can be shattered, it will
prove a double demonstration of what is possible on the modern
railway, for the APT was given special dispensations on speed
restrictions in order to establish its record ...and there are in
any case far more trains around now than there were in 1982". A
little two-faced I may add because Network Rail have been asked
(instructed!!) for 'greens all the way' - i.e signallers instructed
to hold all other trains clearing the path for the record attempt.
So, BOTH the APT & Pendo would have been given special dispensations
in my book.

Although a fan of the Pendolino (I've photographed every single one
& travelled on over half of the fleet) they are still far from
perfect - lack of window seats, small windows (possibly done
deliberately so passengers can't physically see the train tilting) &
the occasional one will 'jerk' from side-to-side instead of the
usual smooth almost unnoticeable tilt.

Long live the APT.....
Andy

Subject: APT-R
Just been reading through an old issue (Feb 82) of Modern Railways magazine. It has a interesting full two-page spread all about the inaugural passenger run on 7th Dec 81 (I'll type it up one day and post it some time in the future - hopefully before the 25th anniversary later this year!). It also contains an index of the previous years magazine of which this article caught my eye: "APT-R could bring forward service date by two years" which is in the  December 1981 issue - I don't suppose anyone has a copy of the Dec 81 issue?

All is not lost as the magazine states that "squadron service with a fleet of 20 APT-R trains could start in December 1986 in government approval was given quickly". It also gives some brief information about the APT-R.... "APT-R is a production version of the prototype trains with separate power car rather than the driving power car planned for the true squadron service APT designated APT-S."

So, If anyone has a copy of the Dec 81 issue of Modern Railways please let us know!!!!

Take care,
Andy

Subject: Re: APT-R
Just dug it out. It's only a small piece:

"APT-R could bring forward service date two years"
"A further version of the Advanced Passenger Train - designated APT-
R - is being considered as a means of bringing forward squadron
service on the West Coast main line by some two years. A British
Rail spokesman, describing the concept to Modern Railways, was at
pains to point out that the 'R'-train was an option being evaluated
and not a firm project. It would use the existing APT-P prototype
vehicles and power cars, plus further power cars and coaches built
to the same design, to give a total fleet of up to 20 trains. The
standard formation would, presumably, use a single power car with
fewer coaches than the present 2 + 12 formation of the APT-P trains
at present being tested. In this case the cost of the new APT-R
equipment would be in the region of £35-40million. The theory behind
the APT-R concept is that by using existing equipment, design work
and tooling, an interim APT fleet could be built while design work
continues on the definitive squadron-service APT-S. When APT-S
entered service - not now anticipated before 1988 - the 'R'-fleet
could be cascaded to other electrified lines."

Having travelled on Pendolino I can confirm the jerky tilt. I was thrown against the window on one notable occasion. First class is better (but only when the company is paying) because the seats are bigger.

Subject: APT-P model
So comming back to the P train model. does anyone have an accurate set
of drawings showing the radiuses of the sides? or even an accurate set
of drawings of the whole thing?
Is there a set at the NRM? I am also after drawings showing the
different underframe arrangements of the different vehicles. for
example the vents down the side of the driving car and different from
the motor car.

Paul. the drawings you have are fantastic. but unfortunatly the wrong
train. but thankyou for doing them anyway.

I think doint the vents of the E train might pose a problem in N gauge.
the resoloution of modern resist is not as good as it was a few years
ago (but it is far safer) and I dont think it will be fine enough. But
good luck anyway. but it should be ok for 4mm.

Group: Advanced-Passenger-Train Message: 2232 From: Paul Rowlinson Date: 22/08/2006
Subject: Re: APT-E Model and drawings

I am after building an O Gauge APT-E but the bogies are likely to be the sticking point. In 4mm it is not so difficult – the Hornby APT-P power bogies could be modified to make a passable representation and the trailer bogies fashioned up out of brass – 7mm makes it more difficult but there is more room to make the thing work prototypically. I reckon a power bogie fitted with two 4mm Portescap motor gearboxes should work and if I wanted to be really powerful I could have two sets! I don’t think the gearing would get anywhere near a prototype speed but then I don’t have a big enough layout to run it on!

Can you send me your e-mail address to pwr@... and we can sort out any details later

Paul

Subject: Re: APT-P model
Just to let you know I think most group members would be interested
in a revised P model as the Horby offering was very basic - for one
the cabs are too wedge shaped! The tilt system on the hornby model
is also simple and should not present any problems to a model
builder although I wonder whether the Bachmann voyager or Dapol
system is worth looking at?

For dimensions etc, you probably should contact Rob Latham at Crewe -
better still go for a day out and see the train in the flesh!
Model Rail took some early pictures a few years ago for one of the
brief masterclass articles.

When I return to Crewe I'll have a look at the drawings collection
(unfortunately they are not a complete set) for you - although we have
to opposite problem to Paul in that the drawings are tiny - they are
all on microfilm and I have no way of printing them.

Thanks Rob

If there are some good drawings on microfilm it should not be too much
of a problem to arrange a loan in order to get them printed. mabye if i
made a donation it would tip the balance.
As i said before, the dimentions i really need are things like the
radiuses of the nose and the carridge sides.
I have had several people say (with the best of intentions) "it was
about this much" but I am afraid that is not good enough. particularly
for a fairly modern image model.

I have sent you a scan of a drawing of APT-S (Those for APT-P are
missing) cross section - let me know if this is any use.

Hello Rob

I replyd by e-mail. the drawing you sent me was very good, thankyou.
its far better to have properly dimensioned drawings than "scale
drawings".

I think I accidently sent you 3 e-mails (I didnt realise that on yahoo
if you press enter twice very fast it sends the e-mail you are working
on! one of the e-mails if slightly longer than the other 2. (i think!!)

Subject: I need some measurements
I was wondering if anyone is going to be in Crew and fancies taking
some measurements of the underframe hatches and the vents.

I dont need a scale drawing of them mearly a badly drawn sketch but
with a full set of dimensions. i also need to know the size of the gaps
between the hatches.
I also need to know the different hatch layouts on the different
coaches.

Some pictures would also be very usefull.

If anyone is in the area and fancies doing this can they contact me and
i will send them some rough diagrams showing the measurements i want.

Subject: Off Topic: Farewell for Old Dalby?
Plans are afoot to commemorate the demise of the Old Dalby test track with a
railtour on 11 November. Pathfinder will be the operator, and the train will
travel the full length of the line from Holwell curve, via the Alstom Test
Centre (to be confirmed) through to Edwalton at the north terminus of the
line. Ealing Broadway is the start point and routing is via the Midland Main
Line picking up at St. Albans, Kettering and Bedford. The added bonus is a
trip along the Great Central Railway (North) branch to Rushcliffe Halt, for
a short break, and then continuing to Fifty Steps Junction before reversing
and heading back to Loughborough.

Main line traction is scheduled for a Class 67, with a Class 60 assisting on
the Old Dalby test track. A Class 25 or 56 will cover the assisting role on
the GCR (N). For more details contact Pathfinder Tours.

Magic! Do they want someone to call out the mileposts on the Test Track? I
could probably do it blindfold.............. <g>

I might just try and go on that one.

The Mastermind show broadcast at 20:00 on 18 September 2006 contained
the following question:

"In the field of railways, what does the acronym APT stand for?"

Jillian Ledwig, specialist subject "The Novels of Jilly Cooper",
correctly answered with "Advanced Passenger Train".

Anyone know of other APT related questions on TV shows, or care to
suggest an APT Q&A and the show it might appear on?

Well this time tomorrow we'll know if the WCML speed record "still"
held by the APT-P has been taken by a Virgin Train's Pendolino (390
047 for anyone who's interested).

For those of you who are lucky ticket holders I hope you have a great
day (I'm fairly confident you will!). I have a feeling the Pendolino
will break the record but from an APT fan's point of view I hope it
doesn't, however, records are there to be broken & the fact that the
current record has stood for almost 25 years (and maybe even longer!?)
is a great credit to a train that many people thought a failure.

Long live the APT....
