APT GLASGOW - LONDON ROUTE

SPEED COMPARISONS : APT & Conventional Trains

The 401¼ mile route from Glasgow to London includes many curves and reverse curves, especially where the line passes through the Tinto and Lowther Hills (between Carstairs and Beattock), across the edge of the Lake District - Penrith to Oxenholme - around the industrial towns of North-West England and through the Trent Valley south of Stafford.

Speeds on the route below the maximum of 90/100 mph for conventional trains and below 125 mph for APT, shown in the following list indicate generally where permanent speed restrictions apply because of curves. These clearly show the APT's speed advantage on curves. A conventional 125 mph train would have to observe the slower speeds.

The list is by no means comprehensive, many other severe restrictions apply - for example, at Atherstone (in the Trent Valley) conventional trains are restricted to 70 mph whilst APT passes through at 100 mph.

Unless otherwise shown, all times are passing times.
